"You are going to hell if you
don't come to our church" Chris
3:98
"Repent or die" Chris 12:78
You won't find any of these quotes
in the Bible (even if you secretly wish
they were there) so don't bother looking.
You will also never find a hard hitting
Bible quote on the front of any web
sites I design.
Just so you know, I am an evangelical
Christian Minister who is not averse
to challenging people from the pulpit
but I won't do it on the front of my
web sites. You see I want to draw people
in to my web sites rather than turn
them away at the front page.
As a little exercise try visiting
the Billy
Graham Web Site (opens in new window).
When I last looked he had a small but
meaningful Bible Quote for the day on
his front page. Nothing offensive or
offputting about that, just a nice inspiring
quote. He doesn't demand a response
on the first page.
You may have aspirations to make
your web site a challenging evangelistic
site and I applaud your efforts but
you must know, if you have been involved
in evangelism, that you first need to
get peoples attention before you can
challenge them. Trying to catch their
attention and challenge them at the
same time does not work it just turns
them off.
On the Internet it is more important
than anywhere else that you make sure
you take a softly, softly approach.
People want to be wooed into the kingdom.
This should be a love story not a shotgun
wedding. Leaving a web site is about
the easiest thing you can do, its just
a click away. Strong Bible quotes on
front pages are more likely to get people
to go somewhere else than challenge
them.
I'm sure I will get lots of emails
saying that I am wrong and that your
"in your face" web site has
converted hundreds of people. I am glad
if it has but I wonder if you ever considered
those who clicked off to somewhere else,
the ones that you will never see or
know about.
